Conventional Neutral Salt Spray Test Unsuitable for Performance Assessment of High Performance Protection System of Equipment

Abstract

The work aims to solve the problems of low severity of conventional neutral salt spray test, such as too long test cycle (sometimes even more than 10 000 hours) and high test and evaluation costs of environmental worthiness test and evaluation of high performance protection systems. Firstly, the development history and current situation of the neutral salt spray test were outlined and the existing Chinese and foreign neutral salt spray test standards were compared and analyzed. Then, the deficiencies of the test were revealed through medium/long-term neutral salt spray test cases, and the causes were analyzed. Next, the modified salt spray/saline water spray test conditions of typical Chinese and foreign salt spray test standards were compared and analyzed, and it was proposed that these improved salt spray test methods were still not severe enough to achieve the purpose of rapid evaluation. Finally, several suggestions were given from the aspects of reasonable selection and tailoring of relevant test conditions and enhancement of the severity of test conditions.
