Corrosion and Protection of Ships in Marine Environments

Abstract

The work aims to systematically analyze the typical corrosion environment characteristics across five marine zones, including the marine atmosphere zone, splash zone, tidal zone, fully immersed zone, and seabed soil zone and highlight that the corrosion severity in the splash and tidal zones is significantly higher than that in the fully immersed and marine atmosphere zones. Furthermore, recognizing ship corrosion as a typical multi-physics and multi-chemistry coupled process, four major corrosion mechanisms of electrochemical, crevice, erosion, and microbiologically influenced corrosion are systematically summarized. Building upon this, the mechanisms and current engineering applications of mainstream protection technologies, including coating protection, cathodic protection, corrosion-resistant materials, surface modification, and corrosion inhibitors are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, in conjunction with industrial frontiers, the future development trends of ship corrosion protection are prospected from the perspectives of green transition, intelligentization, and ecological sustainability.
